Dangote Refinery IPO Opens: What the Historic Share Sale Means for Nigerian Investors

Industrial refinery facilities near Lagos

Nigeria’s capital market entered a new phase today as Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals opened its public share offer. The transaction puts a major industrial asset directly in front of retail investors and turns a national energy story into a capital-markets story.

The offer covers 4.1 billion ordinary shares at ₦525 each, with a minimum subscription of 10 shares. If fully subscribed, the company expects to raise about ₦2.15 trillion, with the proceeds earmarked largely for expansion.

Why the IPO matters beyond Dangote

The bigger question is whether the transaction can deepen Nigerians’ participation in productive assets. A successful offer could encourage other large African businesses to consider public ownership and give the Nigerian Exchange a stronger pipeline of industrial listings.

But investors should separate the excitement around the refinery from the economics of the shares. A famous company is not automatically a cheap company. Prospective investors should read the prospectus, examine earnings, risks, expansion plans and valuation, and avoid making decisions solely because the minimum ticket is accessible.

The refinery is currently designed around 700,000 barrels per day of capacity and has ambitions to reach 1.4 million barrels per day. That expansion could strengthen Nigeria’s refining position, but it also creates execution and financing risks.
