American Diplomat Recalls Canada’s Solidarity With U.S. After 9/11 Attacks

A senior American diplomat has recalled the strong support Canada provided to the United States in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, highlighting a period of close solidarity between the two longtime allies.

The attacks on Sept. 11 killed nearly 3,000 people in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania and triggered major changes to security and foreign policy in the United States and around the world.

In the hours and days that followed, Canada took steps to assist Americans affected by the attacks and help manage the unprecedented disruption to international air travel. When U.S. airspace was closed, hundreds of diverted flights carrying thousands of passengers were directed to Canadian airports.

Communities across Canada opened their doors to stranded travelers, providing food, accommodation and other assistance while passengers waited for air travel to resume.

The American diplomat’s recollection comes as Canada-U.S. relations face renewed strains, particularly over trade, tariffs and disagreements between President Donald Trump and Canadian leaders.

The diplomat’s comments offer a reminder of the longstanding people-to-people and institutional connections between the two countries, which extend beyond trade and politics.

Canada and the United States share one of the world’s longest international borders and maintain extensive cooperation in areas including security, defense, transportation and emergency response.

The solidarity shown after 9/11 remains an important chapter in the relationship, particularly for Americans who experienced the attacks and the Canadians who assisted those affected by the resulting travel shutdown.

As Ottawa and Washington navigate current disagreements, the diplomat’s account underscores the history of cooperation that has helped define relations between the two North American neighbors.
