Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has called on President Bola Tinubu to end his ongoing two-week working visit to France and return to Nigeria to confront the growing wave of insecurity across the nation.
Tinubu departed on April 2 for what the presidency described as a strategic retreat to review midterm performance and plan ahead of the administration’s second anniversary. However, during his absence, violent attacks and abductions have surged, particularly in Plateau, Benue, and Zamfara states.
In a strongly worded post on X, Obi criticized the president’s absence, demanding that he immediately return to take charge of the security situation. He cited the killings of over 150 Nigerians within the two-week period and condemned repeated pipeline explosions in the Niger Delta as further signs of a nation in crisis.
Obi also highlighted renewed insurgency in the North-East and persistent violence in the South-East. He described Tinubu as a “retreating CEO” managing a troubled nation from abroad, questioning the relevance of conducting a strategic review in a peaceful foreign country while Nigeria faces escalating violence.
Obi concluded by stressing that governance should prioritize the safety and wellbeing of all citizens, not personal or political interests.
