U.S. President Donald Trump says he is giving “serious consideration” to renaming Lake Ontario as “Lake America,” adding a new and highly symbolic dimension to the escalating trade dispute between the United States and Canada.
Trump made the proposal Tuesday in a post on his Truth Social platform, linking the suggested name change to deteriorating economic relations with Ontario. He said the United States does not expect to conduct as much business with the Canadian province.
Lake Ontario is one of North America’s five Great Lakes and sits along the international border between Ontario and New York state. Toronto, Canada’s largest city, is located on the lake’s northern shore.
The proposal echoes Trump’s earlier decision to pursue the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America, another move that generated international debate over the authority to change the name of a shared geographic feature.
Canadian officials have largely declined to engage with Trump’s latest social media remarks. Dominic LeBlanc, Canada’s minister responsible for U.S. trade, said Ottawa has decided not to respond to the administration’s daily social media posts.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford also downplayed the significance of the proposal, pointing instead to the province’s major economic relationship with the United States. Ford noted that Ontario is a major trading partner for numerous U.S. states.
The comments come amid a sharp deterioration in Canada-U.S. trade relations. Negotiations recently collapsed, with both governments blaming the other side, while Washington has imposed steep tariffs on Canadian goods. Canada has responded with retaliatory measures.
Trump’s Lake America proposal therefore arrives as part of a much broader dispute involving tariffs, trade negotiations and competing claims over economic sovereignty.
Although Trump can potentially change how a geographic feature is identified for U.S. federal purposes, he cannot unilaterally dictate what Canada or international organizations call a shared waterway.
The unusual proposal has added another layer of political drama to an already tense relationship between the two longtime allies, with the underlying trade dispute continuing to threaten businesses and supply chains on both sides of the border.
