Former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele has officially forfeited multiple luxury mansions and approximately $2 million to the Federal Government after a court granted a final forfeiture order. The ruling marks another major development in the series of legal actions involving the former apex bank chief.
The assets, which include several high-value properties and millions of dollars in cash, were forfeited following investigations by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The anti-graft agency argued that the properties and funds were linked to unlawful activities and sought their permanent forfeiture through the courts.
The court ruled in favor of the Federal Government after determining that the assets met the legal requirements for final forfeiture under Nigerian law. As a result, ownership of the mansions and the $2 million has now been transferred to the Federal Government.
The forfeiture represents one of the most significant asset recovery cases involving a former public official in recent years. Authorities have maintained that recovering proceeds of alleged financial crimes is essential to promoting accountability, transparency, and good governance.
Emefiele, who served as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria from 2014 to 2023, has faced multiple investigations and court proceedings since leaving office. Some of the allegations against him remain before the courts, where the legal process is continuing.
The Federal Government and anti-corruption agencies have reiterated their commitment to pursuing asset recovery and strengthening efforts to combat corruption and financial crimes across the country.
