A devastating fire at a high-rise apartment building in Antwerp, Belgium, has left several people dead and many others injured, prompting a large-scale emergency response and evacuation effort.

The blaze erupted on Wednesday morning on the eighth floor of a 10-storey residential building in Antwerp’s Linkeroever district, a densely populated neighborhood home to more than 200 residents. Thick black smoke quickly engulfed the structure, creating dangerous conditions for those trapped inside and forcing authorities to launch an urgent evacuation operation.

Antwerp police confirmed that multiple fatalities had been reported, while a significant number of residents sustained injuries. Emergency services rushed to the scene as firefighters battled the intense flames under challenging conditions.

Authorities said the size and severity of the fire required the deployment of numerous firefighting teams, police units, medical personnel, and a specialized drone team to assist with monitoring and rescue operations. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Local residents in the surrounding area were advised to keep windows and doors closed and switch off ventilation systems due to the heavy smoke spreading through the neighborhood.

To manage the influx of casualties, officials activated a medical emergency plan aimed at preventing nearby hospitals from becoming overwhelmed while ensuring victims received immediate treatment.

Witnesses described dramatic scenes as residents attempted to escape the smoke-filled building. Television footage showed one individual struggling for fresh air on an upper-floor balcony while surrounded by thick smoke before moving toward a nearby window.

By early afternoon, the visible smoke had largely subsided, but emergency crews remained on-site as rescue, recovery, and investigation efforts continued.

Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever expressed condolences to the victims and displaced residents. In a message shared on social media, he said his thoughts were with those affected by the tragedy and praised emergency responders for their efforts to save lives and contain the fire.

The Linkeroever district, located on the left bank of the River Scheldt, is known for its residential high-rise buildings and proximity to major recreational areas, including parks that host outdoor summer events and concerts.

As authorities continue to assess the damage and investigate the cause of the blaze, the tragedy has shocked residents across Belgium and renewed concerns about fire safety in large residential buildings.
