Rivers State Judiciary Refutes Claims of Chief Judge’s Alleged One-Year Leave
The Rivers State Judiciary has firmly denied recent reports suggesting that the state’s Chief Judge, Justice Simeon Chibuzor Amadi, is set to embark on a one-year recess. In an official statement released on March 5, 2025, the judiciary labeled these allegations as “malicious, misleading, false, and baseless,” asserting that such a leave is not recognized within the judicial officers’ standard vacation calendar.
Clarification from the Judiciary
David Ihua-Maduenyi, the Chief Registrar of the Rivers State High Court, clarified that at no point did the Chief Judge announce or intend to commence any form of extended recess. He emphasized that the judiciary operates under a well-defined vacation schedule, which includes Christmas, Easter, and Annual vacations. The concept of a one-year recess is entirely foreign to their established practices.
The judiciary’s statement urged the public to disregard the unfounded publication, suggesting that it aims to create ill-will, disaffection, and confusion within the state. The judiciary also warned the author and publishers of the false report to retract it immediately or face legal consequences.
Context Amid Political Tensions
This clarification comes amid heightened political tensions in Rivers State. Unverified reports had circulated, alleging that Governor Siminialayi Fubara directed the Chief Judge to proceed on leave to influence proceedings within the State House of Assembly, particularly concerning potential impeachment plans. The judiciary’s prompt denial seeks to dispel these rumors and maintain the integrity of the state’s judicial processes.
