Yahoo and Rogers customers across Canada have until December 27 to claim up to $375 in compensation from a $20 million class-action settlement tied to a series of Yahoo data breaches that occurred between 2013 and 2016.
To qualify for a share of the settlement, eligible individuals must submit their claims online before the deadline.
The breaches, which Yahoo publicly disclosed between 2016 and 2017, revealed that criminal hackers had gained unauthorized access to users’ personal information, exposing millions of accounts worldwide. Yahoo’s systems were compromised in multiple instances, with announcements detailing breaches that took place in 2013, 2014, and from 2015 to 2016. Rogers Communications customers were also affected, as their email services were powered by Yahoo during this period.
The class-action lawsuit alleged that Yahoo’s data security protocols were inadequate and criticized the company for delaying notifications to impacted users. Yahoo, which denies any wrongdoing, reached the $20 million settlement agreement in June 2020.
What Can Customers Claim?
Eligible customers can claim:
- Up to $125 per data breach (up to a maximum of $375).
- Credit monitoring services for one year.
- Reimbursement of out-of-pocket expenses (up to $25,000).
- Partial reimbursement for paid Yahoo services, such as ad-free or premium email and small business services.
Who is Eligible?
To qualify, claimants must meet the following criteria:
- Be a Canadian resident who held a Yahoo or Rogers account between January 1, 2012, and December 31, 2016.
- Not have opted out of the class-action lawsuit.
How to File a Claim
Customers can submit their claims online or review the full settlement agreement on the official Yahoo Data Breach Class Action Settlement website. Additional details are available by calling the toll-free number at 1-866-808-8075.
Important Notes
- Claim payouts may be reduced if the number of valid claims exceeds the settlement fund.
- Individuals who fail to file a claim by the deadline will not receive compensation and forfeit their right to future claims.
- Payments may take over a year to process after the claims review is completed.
The settlement offers a significant opportunity for Yahoo and Rogers customers in Canada to recover some of the financial and personal impacts caused by the data breaches.
