In a major leap for digital connectivity, Premier Doug Ford’s government has secured a $100-million deal with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to provide high-speed internet access to rural and remote communities across Ontario. Dubbed ONSAT (Ontario Satellite Internet), this initiative will utilize SpaceX’s Starlink satellite network to connect 15,000 underserved homes and businesses, announced Infrastructure Minister Kinga Surma.
“These communities will soon have reliable, high-speed internet, enabling them to access streaming, video calls, online gaming, and other essential services,” Surma stated, emphasizing the program’s impact on digital equity. The system, set to launch in June, will cover equipment and installation costs for eligible residents, with registration beginning in the spring. However, users will be responsible for monthly service fees.
SpaceX’s Starlink system, known for its rapid setup, has already seen success in Pikangikum First Nation, where it enabled high-speed connectivity within minutes. As part of the agreement, SpaceX will also engage with Indigenous communities to ensure equitable access, creating job and training opportunities within these regions, according to Infrastructure Ontario CEO Michael Lindsay.
This project is part of Ontario’s broader $4-billion initiative to expand high-speed internet across the province. With $2.5 billion already invested, Ontario has connected over 100,000 residents and is set to reach 450,000 more through ongoing efforts.
