Winnipeg Police Open Fire on Stolen Truck, Causing Explosion and House Fire

Winnipeg police were involved in a dramatic incident on Friday night, when they opened fire on a stolen pickup truck that was driven toward them in an attempt to flee. The truck then crashed into a nearby house, causing an explosion and a fire.

The incident began around 6 p.m. when officers spotted the stolen Ford F250 heading north on Home Street. After a failed attempt to block the truck with a police cruiser, the driver reversed and struck another vehicle. The truck then drove toward the officers, prompting them to fire shots.

The truck swerved around the police vehicle and continued down the street, eventually crashing into a house between St. Matthews and Ellice avenues. The collision ignited a fire, which spread to a fuel tank in the truck, leading to an explosion.

Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident. The driver, a 48-year-old man, and a 29-year-old woman passenger fled on foot but were arrested nearby.

Residents in the area, including a mother whose son had been playing outside, expressed shock at the event. The explosion and subsequent fire were contained by 7:15 p.m., though a cat inside the house was found dead.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba is reviewing the police’s actions in the incident.
