Andrew Krywonizka, a Winnipeg man once charged with 70 weapons-related offences, is suing the city and police, alleging they destroyed over $50,000 worth of firearms despite a court order to auction them. Krywonizka’s extensive firearm collection was seized in 2019 during a police raid that uncovered 73 firearms, thousands of rounds of ammunition, high-capacity magazines, and other items.
While some guns were forfeited to the Crown, a provincial judge had ordered others to be sold. According to a lawsuit filed in Manitoba’s Court of King’s Bench, an auctioneer attempting to retrieve the firearms was first told to wait for a Crown appeal, and later received no response after the appeal was dismissed. Krywonizka later learned that police had destroyed all the firearms, though it remains unclear who authorized the action.
Diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, Krywonizka had collected firearms along with model trains, books, and Lego as a way to manage anxiety. The court had previously deemed him low-risk to reoffend. Krywonizka is now seeking unspecified damages for the loss of his collection. The city and police have declined to comment, citing lack of awareness of the lawsuit.
