Winnipeg Man Charged After Alleged Knife Attack on Pastor During Church Service

A Winnipeg man faces charges after allegedly attempting to stab a pastor during a service at Holy Ghost Parish on Selkirk Avenue.

Police responded to the North End church at 6 p.m. on Sunday, where they found that a 50-year-old man armed with a knife had approached the altar and attempted to assault a 38-year-old pastor. Fortunately, the pastor managed to evade the attack and escape unharmed.

“The pastor actually ended up running off the stage,” said Const. Stephen Spencer of the Winnipeg Police Service, noting the pastor’s quick reaction likely prevented injury.

After the failed attack, the suspect stabbed the knife into the altar and sat in a chair at the back. An off-duty RCMP officer, assisted by church attendees, detained him until police arrived.

Authorities charged the suspect with multiple offenses, including assault with a weapon. While the motive remains unclear, police say there is no known connection between the pastor and the attacker.

The Archdiocese of Winnipeg acknowledged the incident in a statement, expressing gratitude that no one was harmed.
