Winnipeg Jets Dominate Calgary Flames 5-2 in Preseason Showdown

Winnipeg, MB — The Winnipeg Jets showcased their depth and talent in a solid 5-2 victory over the Calgary Flames during a preseason matchup at Canada Life Centre on October 2, 2024. Despite a sluggish start, the Jets pulled away in the third period, demonstrating the potential of their regular lineup.

The game remained tied until late in the final frame when Winnipeg scored three goals in a decisive 14-minute stretch. Jets head coach Scott Arniel acknowledged the team’s lack of energy in the first two periods but was pleased with their improvement as the game progressed. “I think our whole team was kinda sleepy for two periods… it was a little bit sloppy, but the group got better as the game went on,” Arniel said.

Nino Niederreiter stood out with two goals, while Gabriel Vilardi contributed significantly with three assists and five shots on goal. Arniel praised Vilardi’s elite passing ability and vision, highlighting how his skill set opens up opportunities for his teammates. The top line, featuring Vilardi, Mark Scheifele, and Kyle Connor, combined for six points, showing signs of chemistry just before the regular season begins.

Both teams had their share of scoring chances, but the Jets’ special teams played a crucial role in the outcome. They successfully killed off all their penalties and capitalized on one of three power play opportunities, marking their third consecutive game with a power play goal. “We’ve been working on it,” said forward Nikolaj Ehlers. “Overall, we created a lot of chances today.”

Goaltender Connor Hellebuyck rebounded from a tough first outing by stopping 17 of the 19 shots he faced, providing a solid performance between the pipes. Unfortunately, the Jets had to contend with an injury concern as forward David Gustafsson exited the game in the second period with a lower-body issue.

The Flames struck first, with Martin Frk redirecting a shot past Hellebuyck just over eight minutes into the first period. However, the Jets responded quickly, leveling the score with a power play goal by Ehlers, assisted by Vilardi. Niederreiter gave Winnipeg a brief lead, but the Flames equalized again before the end of the first period.

After a scoreless second, the Jets regained their advantage early in the third. Niederreiter’s second goal came on a rebound, followed by Simon Lundmark adding an insurance marker with a shot from the point. Connor capped off the scoring with a goal from the slot, showcasing the Jets’ offensive prowess.

The two teams will face off again in Calgary on Friday for the final preseason contest, with puck drop scheduled for 8 p.m. CDT. Pregame coverage will begin at 6 p.m. on Power 97.
