Winnipeg Fire Destroys Vacant Elmwood Home, City Crews Demolish Structure

A vacant two-storey house in Winnipeg’s Elmwood neighborhood is being demolished after a fire broke out early Sunday.

Firefighters responded around 7 a.m. to reports of a blaze at the boarded-up home on William Newton Avenue between Allan Street and Elmwood Road, encountering heavy black smoke and flames.

Crews brought the fire under control by 8:30 a.m., preventing damage to nearby homes. However, due to structural instability, city workers have initiated emergency demolition, with road closures in place until completion.

No injuries have been reported, but icy conditions from firefighting efforts have made roads and sidewalks slippery. City crews are applying sand to improve traction.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The property had previously caught fire in August and September last year, with one incident attributed to an electrical malfunction.

Residents are urged to report any unauthorized entry into vacant buildings by calling 911. Breached doors or windows should be reported to 311.
