A state of emergency has been declared in Peguis First Nation due to ongoing wildfires, prompting vehicle bans and evacuation measures. The community has issued a ban on ATVs and off-road vehicles to ensure public safety and protect infrastructure, with fines imposed for those who violate the ban. While the fire is now under control, it has already destroyed one home in the area.
Opaskwayak Cree Nation has also taken action, evacuating residents from the Bracken Dam area as a precautionary measure. While residents of Big Eddy and Carrot River have been allowed to return home, they are urged to remain alert as the situation continues to evolve. As of Monday morning, around 60 homes were evacuated, though no injuries or property destruction have been reported.
For those in need of shelter, temporary accommodations are available at the Veterans Hall and the Gordon Lathlin Memorial Centre.
