In a significant step towards mitigating the impacts of flooding and drought in the most vulnerable communities of Katsina State and Adamawa State, Oxfam and the Christian Rural and Urban Development Association of Nigeria (CRUDAN) have joined forces to develop and implement an early action protocol. This initiative aims to bolster community resilience and reduce disaster risks through a comprehensive capacity-building program.
A three-day training session was recently held by these organizations, focusing on flood mitigation strategies. This training brought together key stakeholders, including media representatives, to explore effective strategies for minimizing the loss of lives and property due to flooding. The initiative seeks to address the recurring annual incidents that claim lives and damage properties in these regions.
The collaborative effort by Oxfam, CRUDAN, and the Wahafa Project focuses on combating flood impacts in Numan, Adamawa, and addressing drought conditions in Baure, Katsina States. Stakeholders are urging communities in Numan, with a population of 376,026, to heed flood warnings to enhance preparedness and response.
Dr. William Mafalan, representing Oxfam’s Country Director John Makina, emphasized the uniqueness of the program, highlighting the selection of Numan Local Government Area as a pilot project for disaster risk reduction. The program is designed to set a precedent for other regions to adopt effective disaster management strategies.
Tobi Salawu, Program Manager for CRUDAN, expressed appreciation for the partnership, urging stakeholders to take ownership of the project to ensure its success and sustainability. Representatives from various state ministries also commended CRUDAN and Oxfam for their efforts, noting the importance of sensitizing communities along the riverbanks.
This collaborative effort demonstrates a strong commitment to reducing the impact of natural disasters through community engagement and proactive measures. The initiative aims to extend its reach to other regions, promoting disaster awareness and preparedness to safeguard vulnerable populations.
