The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed that 20 medical and dental students and a House Officer who were kidnapped in Benue State en route to the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students (FECAMDS) annual convention in Enugu State have been released.
The students are from the University of Maiduguri and University of Jos. They were travelling together when they were ambushed by gunmen in the Otukpo area of Benue State.
The Nigeria Police Force handed over the medical and dental students and a House Officer who were kidnapped in Benue State to their parents.
The Vice Chancellors of the University of Jos and the University of Maiduguri were at the Nigerian Police Headquarters to receive the freed students of the Universities kidnapped by gunmen on August 15.
Addressing a press conference in the Federal Capital Territory, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, commended the efforts of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu and other security operatives for their contributions towards the release of those students.
The students had been in captivity since Friday August 23, 2024 in Ntunkon forest, Benue State.
The Police said that no ransom was paid for their release.
