(VIDEO) Customs Seize Smuggled Petrol Worth N86.5m

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), through Operation Whirlwind, has intensified its crackdown on economic saboteurs, seizing petroleum products worth over N86.5 million in the Adamawa/Taraba Command border areas.

In November 2024 alone, the operation intercepted 71,965 liters of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), including 1,124 jerry cans of various capacities, 53 drums of 200 liters each, and 21,000 liters stored in two fuel tankers. The seized products were allegedly intended for smuggling to neighboring Cameroon.

Speaking during a press briefing in Yola The Comptroller Garba Bashir of the Adamawa and Taraba Command decried the devastating effects of smuggling on Nigeria’s economic growth. He called for collaborative efforts from stakeholders to combat the menace.

Meanwhile, Comptroller H.K. Ejibunu, Coordinator of Operation Whirlwind, credited the success to the unwavering commitment and collective efforts of the operatives in Zone D. He emphasized that the operation had also confiscated five vehicles and two motorcycles used in transporting the smuggled fuel.

Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) in Yola, while one was handed over in Taraba State for further inter-agency action.

The NCS also recently handed over 14 intercepted fuel tankers to relevant authorities and continues to advocate for inter-agency collaboration to dismantle smuggling networks effectively.
