The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adamawa/Taraba Area Command, has intercepted smuggled items valued at N71.7 million between August and September 2023. The seizures were made from suspected smugglers attempting to transport goods across the border into Cameroon.
Customs Area Comptroller Garba Bashir revealed this on Thursday during a press briefing in Yola. He highlighted that the seized items included 1,115 jerry cans of 25 liters each, along with 26 drums of 220 liters, amounting to a total of 33,595 liters of petrol. These were allegedly intended for smuggling into Cameroon.
Additionally, the command confiscated three vehicles used by the smugglers, 200 bags of foreign flour, 57 bags of foreign parboiled rice, and 10 bales of second-hand clothing.
Comptroller Bashir commended the officers involved and urged continued vigilance in the fight against smuggling, emphasizing that such illegal activities hinder Nigeria’s economic development. He also called on smugglers to abandon their illicit trade and engage in legitimate businesses.
