Speaking in Yola during a briefing on the progress of Operation Whirlwind, a strategic operation designed to curb fuel smuggling across Nigeria’s borders, Adeniyi, represented by Deputy Comptroller-General of Enforcement, Investigations, and Inspections, Olaniyi Olajogun, announced that two filling stations in Adamawa had been fined for their involvement in smuggling activities. The two stations—Oilpad Global Services Limited, opposite Yola International Airport, and Gawi Oil Nigeria Limited, located along Numan Road—were implicated by a court for illegally exporting Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).

The seized fuel, amounting to over 94,000 litres, was auctioned to the public at ₦630 per litre. “Operation Whirlwind, launched in collaboration with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), continues to record significant success in stopping the illegal exportation of petroleum products,” said Olajogun.

The operation has led to several seizures, including two trucks carrying 33,000 litres of PMS each, over 1,000 jerricans of 25 litres capacity, and 12 drums containing 200 litres of PMS. These confiscated items, valued at ₦75.45 million, were part of the latest wave of crackdowns aimed at dismantling smuggling networks in Adamawa. One individual was arrested and is currently in custody in Abuja for further investigation.

Comptroller Kehinde Ejibune, the National Coordinator of Operation Whirlwind, praised the support his team has received from the Customs leadership, stating that their efforts, in collaboration with other security agencies, would soon put an end to smuggling activities in the region. “We are determined to protect Nigeria’s economy and fight poverty by ensuring that smugglers are put out of business,” Ejibune said confidently.

The Nigeria Customs Service continues to reaffirm its commitment to economic growth and national security, with ongoing efforts to disrupt illegal smuggling operations across the country.
