Public health experts have united in a powerful call for immediate regulatory action to address the health risks associated with the bouillon cube fortification in the country.
They were reacting to the rise of non-communicable diseases in Nigeria.
The experts urged the government to ensure that food producers did what should be done so that people would be aware of food fortification.
They made the call in Abuja at a press briefing organized by Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) with the theme: “Salt Targets in Nigeria.
The event featured nutrition and food experts and health activists who urged the government to accelerate preliminary activities for salt sodium regulation in Nigeria.
Keynote speaker and Technical Advisor, Network for Health Equity & Development (NHED), Dr. Jerome Mafeni raised the alarm about Nigeria’s food system, warning that the excessive sodium content in the products poses significant risks to human health.
He condemned the MSG secrecy noting that consumers need an informed decision on what they want to eat
CAPPA’s Executive Director, Akinbode Oluwafemi, lamented the criminalisation of foods.
Other stakeholders warned against excessive consumption of food seasoning.
Stakeholders generally urged the media and civil society to create awareness by educating the masses on all they needed to know about food fortification.
