Paris Laroche, 29, has been sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 12 years after being convicted of second-degree murder and interfering with human remains in the 2020 killing of her ex-boyfriend, 33-year-old Sidney Mantee.
The estranged couple still lived together in their Nanaimo apartment when Mantee disappeared in October 2020. Police searched the unit in May 2021, confirming suspicions of foul play. By July, the case had officially become a homicide investigation.
During the trial, an undercover officer testified that Laroche confessed after he and another investigator posed as the family of a woman who had allegedly been abused by Mantee. Laroche invited them into her apartment, showed them two saws and a hammer used in the crime, and admitted to disposing of Mantee’s remains “piece by piece” into the ocean over several months.
More than a dozen of Mantee’s bone fragments were found in two city parks. A former employer testified that Laroche confided in her about storing the body in her refrigerator and gradually disposing of it. Laroche also claimed Mantee had been abusive, threatening her loved ones and harming her pet.
Initially charged with first-degree murder, Laroche was convicted of the lesser charge. Alongside her life sentence, she received a concurrent four-year prison term for interfering with human remains and will face a 10-year firearm prohibition upon release.
