Val Kilmer, the acclaimed actor known for his iconic roles in Top Gun, Batman Forever, and The Doors, has died at 65. His daughter, Mercedes Kilmer, confirmed that he passed away Tuesday night in Los Angeles, surrounded by family and friends.
Kilmer, who had previously battled throat cancer, died from pneumonia. Despite losing his voice due to multiple tracheotomies, he continued to inspire audiences, as seen in the 2021 documentary Val, where his son, Jack, voiced his reflections.
Rising to fame in the 1980s with Top Secret! and Real Genius, Kilmer became a Hollywood leading man in the ’90s, starring in Tombstone, Heat, and The Saint. His dedication to Method acting was legendary—immersing himself in roles like Jim Morrison in The Doors and Doc Holliday in Tombstone.
Though often labeled “difficult” in Hollywood, Kilmer defended his approach as artistic integrity. His career faced setbacks, including The Island of Dr. Moreau, one of Hollywood’s most infamous productions. Yet, he remained a respected actor, later returning as Iceman in Top Gun: Maverick, with his voice digitally recreated.
Kilmer is survived by his children, Mercedes and Jack, from his marriage to actress Joanne Whalley. His legacy as a gifted, enigmatic performer endures.
