Kenya’s President Sacks Ministers After Anti-tax Protests

President William Ruto of Kenya has announced the dismissal of ministers in his cabinet, including the attorney-general with “immediate effect”, following the recent deadly protests which led to the withdrawal of an unpopular tax bill.

Ruto said he made the move after “reflection, listening to Kenyans, and after holistic appraisal of my cabinet”.

Two cabinet members who were not affected by the president’s action are the deputy president, who cannot be legally sacked and the prime cabinet secretary who also doubles as the foreign affairs minister.

Ruto hinted he will now make wide consultations to form a broad-based government, but did not say when.

He said the dissolution of his cabinet would not affect government operations as the running of government would continue under the supervision of senior civil servants.

Three of the sacked ministers reportedly left their roles as members of Parliament to join Ruto’s cabinet barely two years after he became president.
