{"id":6030,"date":"2024-08-14T12:37:47","date_gmt":"2024-08-14T12:37:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/swifteradio.com\/update\/restore\/?p=6030"},"modified":"2024-08-14T12:37:47","modified_gmt":"2024-08-14T12:37:47","slug":"zambias-former-first-lady-maureen-mwanawasa-dies-at-61","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/swifteradio.com\/update\/zambias-former-first-lady-maureen-mwanawasa-dies-at-61\/","title":{"rendered":"Zambia&#8217;s Former First Lady, Maureen Mwanawasa Dies At 61"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zambia&#8217;s former First Lady Maureen Mwanawasa has died at the age of 61.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to family sources, she succumbed late Tuesday after a brief illness at a hospital in the capital, Lusaka.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The former first lady was married to the country&#8217;s third President, Levy Mwanawasa, who ruled Zambia from 2002 until his death in 2008.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">President Hakainde Hichilema described her death as a &#8220;deep shock&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> lawyer by profession, Mwanawasa was an active advocate for social justice, community development and public health issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She ran a law firm with her husband until he joined politics and was actively involved in her husband&#8217;s successful presidential bid in 2001.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She was considered a potential candidate to succeed her husband before his death in 2008, but she did not seek to stand after he died.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2016, Mwanawasa contested for the position of mayor of Lusaka but was not successful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She was a founding member and former president of the Organisation of African First Ladies Against HIV\/AIDS, currently known as the Organisation of African First Ladies for Development.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her efforts in community development earned her several awards, including the International Hope Award from World Vision in 2006.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Source: BBC News<\/b><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Zambia&#8217;s former First Lady Maureen Mwanawasa has died at the age of 61.
