{"id":4941,"date":"2024-07-24T16:42:58","date_gmt":"2024-07-24T16:42:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/swifteradio.com\/update\/restore\/?p=4941"},"modified":"2024-07-24T16:42:58","modified_gmt":"2024-07-24T16:42:58","slug":"kenyas-president-ruto-appoints-opposition-members-to-cabinet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/swifteradio.com\/update\/kenyas-president-ruto-appoints-opposition-members-to-cabinet\/","title":{"rendered":"Kenya&#8217;s President Ruto Appoints Opposition Members To Cabinet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kenyan President William Ruto has named key allies of main opposition leader Raila Odinga to his cabinet in a bid to quell growing discontent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He gave\u00a0 the opposition four posts, including the powerful ministries of finance and energy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the first time the opposition has been in government since\u00a0 Odinga took over as prime minister in then president Mwai Kibaki&#8217;s cabinet in 2008.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ruto&#8217;s decision comes as he faces the biggest crisis of his presidency as youths take to the streets to demand his resignation using the hashtag #RutoMustGo.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his address to the nation,\u00a0 Ruto said he had held extensive talks to form a &#8220;broad-based government&#8221; to lead a &#8220;transformational agenda&#8221; to make Kenya a &#8220;better, more just and\u00a0 prosperous\u201d nation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But protesters rejected the &#8220;broad-based&#8221; government, saying it would continue to make deals only among Kenya&#8217;s political elite.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are four opposition members in the ministries:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">John Mbadi (finance, referred to as treasury in Kenya)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Opiyo Wandayi (energy and petroleum)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hassan Joho (mining and blue economy) and<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wycliffe Oparanya (co-operatives and micro, small and medium enterprises development).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">President Ruto has appointed a total of 10\u00a0 members to the government, bringing his government to 21.
