Artificial intelligence safety is facing a new test after Anthropic disclosed a series of attempts to misuse its Claude models for cyberattacks, weapons-related work and the extraction of advanced AI capabilities.<\/p>\n
The company’s latest threat report says bad actors have moved beyond simple chatbot misuse and are increasingly trying to make AI systems perform larger parts of complex operations. Anthropic said some of the activity involved malicious code, intelligence gathering, weapons software and efforts to bypass model safeguards.<\/p>\n
One of the most important findings is the reported use of AI agents to automate multiple stages of cyber operations. Instead of using a chatbot for an isolated answer, attackers can attempt to divide a campaign into tasks and let software handle much of the work under human supervision.<\/p>\n
Anthropic also reported a suspected Russia-linked cyber operation targeting Ukrainian officials. The company said AI was used to adapt phishing and malware activity, showing how generative systems can lower the technical barrier for sophisticated attacks.<\/p>\n
The report also describes attempts to use AI for conventional weapons development, including software for missiles and drones, as well as research connected to biological threats. Anthropic said its safeguards blocked many requests, but some operators tried to disguise their intentions or spread activity across multiple sessions.<\/p>\n
That has increased pressure on technology companies and governments to build stronger safety controls around increasingly capable models.<\/p>\n
Most people will never interact with the type of advanced systems described in the report, but the implications are broad. AI-assisted fraud, phishing and automated attacks can eventually reach ordinary consumers, businesses and public institutions.<\/p>\n
The episode is also likely to intensify the debate over how AI companies should monitor abuse while protecting legitimate users.
