\u00c9lections Qu\u00e9bec said it previously provided election information in both French and English but is now required to prioritize French under Quebec\u2019s updated language legislation. The law makes French the sole language of communication for public institutions in many circumstances.<\/p>\n
The election authority said it asked Quebec\u2019s commissioner of the French language for an exception that would allow the printed materials to be distributed bilingually. The request was rejected.<\/p>\n
The documents will include a QR code directing voters to \u00c9lections Qu\u00e9bec\u2019s website, where information is available in English. \u00c9lections Qu\u00e9bec also says eligible anglophones and Indigenous people can contact the agency to request information in English.<\/p>\n
However, the agency says the short campaign period means it cannot now reprint and redistribute the physical documents in English.<\/p>\n
The decision has become a political issue during the election campaign. Coalition Avenir Qu\u00e9bec Leader Christine Fr\u00e9chette said she is discussing the situation with \u00c9lections Qu\u00e9bec to determine what options remain.<\/p>\n
Other party leaders have also weighed in. Parti Qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois Leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon said he opposes institutional bilingualism but argued that voters should have access to essential information in English when exercising a fundamental democratic right.<\/p>\n
Qu\u00e9bec solidaire parliamentary leader Ruba Ghazal raised particular concerns about seniors and other voters who may not have reliable internet access or may struggle to use digital platforms.<\/p>\n
The controversy comes as Quebec prepares for a closely watched provincial election. The province is scheduled to vote on Oct. 5, with the Parti Qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois currently leading several public opinion polls.<\/p>\n
\u00c9lections Qu\u00e9bec says voters should receive their information cards by Sept. 18, giving electors details about voting arrangements ahead of election day.<\/p>\n
The dispute has renewed debate over the balance between Quebec\u2019s efforts to protect and promote the French language and the need to ensure that all eligible voters can easily access information necessary to participate in the democratic process.<\/p>\n
For now, \u00c9lections Qu\u00e9bec says the printed documents will remain French-only, while English-language voting information will primarily be available through its website and upon request for eligible voters.<\/p>\n
