Google Maps has begun displaying \u201cLake America\u201d instead of Lake Ontario for users in the United States, following President Donald Trump\u2019s executive order renaming the Great Lake in U.S. federal geographic records.<\/p>\n

The Google Maps update adds a technological dimension to an increasingly contentious Canada-U.S. dispute. Trump\u2019s renaming decision came shortly after trade negotiations between Washington and Ottawa broke down and Canada announced retaliatory tariffs.<\/p>\n
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has rejected the change, saying Canadians will continue to recognize the body of water by its traditional name, Lake Ontario. Ontario Premier Doug Ford has also criticized the U.S. renaming and reaffirmed the province\u2019s use of the original name.<\/p>\n
