Instead, voters were asked whether Iceland should resume accession negotiations that were suspended in 2013. Any eventual agreement to join the bloc would have required another referendum.

The result represents another setback for supporters of closer European integration. Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir and other proponents had argued that reopening talks could give Iceland greater economic and geopolitical security, particularly amid rising tensions in the Arctic and uncertainty surrounding the future of European security.

Opponents of restarting negotiations focused heavily on national sovereignty and control over Iceland’s fishing industry, a crucial part of the country’s economy. They argued that joining the EU could subject Iceland to the bloc’s common fisheries policy and reduce its control over its own waters.

The vote also took place against the backdrop of U.S. President Donald Trump’s repeated interest in Greenland, which brought Arctic security into Iceland’s EU debate. Supporters of the proposal argued that stronger ties with Europe could provide additional security at a time of increasing geopolitical uncertainty.

Regional voting patterns revealed a clear divide. Reykjavík was the only part of Iceland where a majority supported reopening negotiations, while rural areas and other constituencies backed the “No” campaign.

Iceland will nevertheless remain closely connected to Europe. The country is already part of the European Economic Area and the Schengen area, giving it access to much of the EU single market and allowing passport-free travel within Schengen without full EU membership.

The result is likely to put the question of Icelandic EU membership on the political back burner once again, while preserving the country’s existing relationship with the European bloc.

swifteradio.com/update/

Icelandic voters have rejected a proposal to restart negotiations on joining the European Union, ending another…

[387,370
5522,4403,7156,7157,7158,3721,7159,7006,7160,7161,7162,7009,7163,7010,7011,7013,7164,7015,7165,7016,7017,7018,7166,7019,7167,5781,7020,7168
post-23565","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-breaking","category-politics","tag-aaprec","tag-breaking-news","tag-donald-trump-greenland-threats","tag-eu-accession-negotiations","tag-eu-enlargement","tag-europe-news","tag-european-integration","tag-european-union-membership","tag-european-union-news","tag-geopolitical-news","tag-iceland-arctic-security","tag-iceland-economy","tag-iceland-eu-accession-talks","tag-iceland-eu-membership","tag-iceland-eu-referendum","tag-iceland-europe-relations","tag-iceland-european-union","tag-iceland-fishing-industry","tag-iceland-national-referendum","tag-iceland-news","tag-iceland-politics","tag-iceland-referendum-2026","tag-iceland-rejects-eu-talks","tag-iceland-sovereignty","tag-iceland-voters","tag-international-politics","tag-kristrun-frostadottir","tag-trump-greenland
https://bostonglobe-prod.cdn.arcpublishing.com/resizer/v2/JIMKWBIKNK63BMP447MRGZEWSU.jpg?auth=285a71d2d9cad82db3b7641e911b8ca3a6b7502358cd0187f5d78f4406ee893a&width=1440
["GET
