A large police operation in Winnipeg\u2019s Osborne Village on Wednesday morning ended with one person taken into custody after heavily armed tactical officers surrounded a residential property during an early-morning raid.<\/p>\n
The Winnipeg Police Service tactical unit moved into the area along Roslyn Road, just off Osborne Street, shortly after dawn and focused their attention on a house located directly behind a Shell gas station.<\/p>\n
Residents reported hearing multiple loud explosions during the operation, believed to be flashbangs used by officers as they attempted to enter the property and secure the suspect.<\/p>\n
John Wintrup, who lives nearby, said the first blast was heard around 5:15 a.m., followed by police announcements over a loudspeaker stating they had a warrant for someone\u2019s arrest.<\/p>\n
Witnesses reported hearing additional bangs shortly after 6:00 a.m., again just before 7:00 a.m., and a few minutes later.<\/p>\n
Nearby residents were warned to remain inside their homes as the operation unfolded. A CBC Manitoba employee living close to the scene said a message was broadcast through their building\u2019s intercom system advising residents about the police presence and instructing them to stay indoors.<\/p>\n
Wintrup said his building received a similar alert that also asked residents to avoid going onto their balconies while officers carried out the operation.<\/p>\n
Flashbang devices, also known as stun grenades, produce an intense burst of light and a loud noise designed to temporarily disorient people. Residents said the blasts were strong enough to cause noticeable vibrations in nearby buildings.<\/p>\n
Police initially released very little information about the operation. In a brief social media update, authorities said there was no immediate threat to public safety and described the situation as a contained investigation.<\/p>\n
During the operation, access to nearby businesses, including a Shoppers Drug Mart and the Shell gas station, was restricted while officers secured the area.<\/p>\n
Local residents said the house targeted by police had been a source of concern in the neighbourhood for months.<\/p>\n
Wintrup described it as a \u201cproblem property,\u201d citing ongoing nuisance behaviour including illegal dumping into nearby condo garbage bins, vehicles parked erratically around the property, and frequent visitors coming and going at all hours.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve complained about it, the neighbours have complained about it all winter long,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s important to see the police finally showing up here. I\u2019m glad they are.\u201d<\/p>\n
Police officers were seen putting on gas masks and deploying pepper spray shortly before leading a man out of the house in handcuffs.<\/p>\n
Authorities began clearing the scene around 9:30 a.m. after the suspect was taken into custody. Police have not yet released further details about the investigation or the charges the individual may face.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
