A U.S. military helicopter crashed over the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz on Monday, prompting immediate concern amid heightened tensions in the Middle East. President Donald Trump later confirmed that both pilots aboard the aircraft were safely rescued and suffered no injuries.
Speaking to reporters before boarding Air Force One early Tuesday, Trump reassured the public that the crew members were unharmed and said additional details would be released in an official report.
“The pilots are fine,” Trump said, adding that a full account of the incident would be made available soon.
The cause of the crash remains unclear, and military officials have yet to disclose what led to the helicopter going down over one of the world’s most important shipping routes. The Strait of Hormuz serves as a critical artery for global energy markets, with roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply typically passing through the narrow waterway.
The incident comes during a period of renewed instability in the region. Hours before Trump’s remarks, Iran and Israel reportedly exchanged direct attacks for the first time since an April ceasefire agreement, raising fears of a broader escalation before both sides appeared to pull back from further confrontation.
The Strait of Hormuz has remained a focal point of geopolitical tensions throughout the conflict. Iran has maintained significant influence over maritime traffic in the area since the outbreak of hostilities involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.
Despite the helicopter incident, Trump expressed confidence that diplomatic efforts with Tehran are nearing a breakthrough. He told reporters that negotiations are in their final stages and suggested an agreement could be reached within days.
According to Trump, any future deal would prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons and would immediately reopen the Strait of Hormuz to unrestricted commercial shipping.
“We’re in the final throes of what will be a very, very good deal,” Trump said. He added that the strait could reopen “immediately upon signing,” potentially within two or three days.
The comments are the latest in a series of optimistic statements from the president regarding negotiations with Iran. While ceasefire discussions and diplomatic talks have continued in recent weeks, no formal agreement has yet been announced.
