    Rivers state Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has inaugurated a Judicial Commission of Inquiry to investigate the arson, killings, and destruction of property at some local government council secretariats in the state.

    Fubara inaugurated the seven-member commission at the Executive Chambers of Government House in Port Harcourt

    The commission has one month to conclude its assignment, ithas Justice Ibiwengi Minakiri as Chairman; Mrs. Inyingi Brown as the Secretary; and Uzor Ikenga as the counsel.

    Other members are Felicia Nwoke; Prof. Blessing Didia; Sir Samuel Egbe; and Venerable Alex Usifor.

    The governor said the recent attacks and burning of local government councils’ secretariats on October 7, 2024, seemed like a repeat of what was experienced in 2014, months to the general elections of 2015 when courts were set ablaze, residences bombed and people killed, leading to the closure of courts in Rivers State.

    Fubara said his administration will not look away while ill-guided youths and sponsored political thugs turn the state into a theatre of violence without being made to pay for such crimes against the state.

    The Nigerian Senate has passed the second reading of the Investments and Securities Bill 2024.

    This bill aims to replace the outdated Investments and Securities Act of 2007, promoting economic growth.

    This initiative was spearheaded by the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele and Senator Osita Izunaso, who emphasized the vital role of the capital market in driving economic growth.

    Speaking in support of the bill, other Senators believed it will protect investors by enforcing stricter regulations and enhancing market transparency.

    In his remarks, President of the Senate Godswill Akpabio who committed the bill to committee on the capital market for further legislation function, emphasized that the legislation is crucial for strengthening Nigeria’s economy.

    The Nigerian Senate has directed the Federal Road Maintenance Agency to intervene in the rehabilitation of shuwa, Jigalambu and Baladega Bridge which was affected by flooding in Adamawa North.

    Sponsor of the bill, Senator Amos Yohanna representing Adamawa North in his lead debate stated that the flooding has caused catastrophic destruction in five Local Government Areas leaving thousands of people stranded and in dire need, with hundreds of houses and farmlands destroyed.

    In their remarks lawmakers urged flood response Agencies to rise to the occasion and do the needful while noting that preventive measures must also be taken to avert such disasters.

    The Senate directed the National Emergency Management Agency to reach out to the affected communities and provide relief materials while mandating its committee on Legislative Compliance to ensure that NEMA and FERMA Carry out the Senate resolutions.

    CP Mustafa took over from Olatunji Disu. He outlined his plans for the command and residents of Rivers State while addressing journalists at the state police command in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State.

    He said his primary objective is to restore calm in the Local Government Areas where incidents of violence and arson have occurred in recent days.

    He said he is commited to work with state and non-state actors, as well as all critical stakeholders, to address these challenges. The CP also said that he has reviewed the current security situation, and outlined his vision and strategies to ensure the safety and security of communities and residents across the state.
