Israel Launches Ground Operations in Southern Lebanon as Battle Intensifies Around Khiam

The Israeli military has announced the launch of “limited and targeted ground operations” in southern Lebanon as fighting with Hezbollah intensifies near the strategic town of Khiam.

According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), troops from its 91st Division have begun operations aimed at destroying militant infrastructure and targeting Hezbollah fighters in the region. The offensive forms part of Israel’s broader strategy to establish a forward defense zone along its northern border.

Several air strikes were reported around Khiam on Monday, while additional Israeli raids targeted nearby towns including Yater, Burj Qalawiya, Sultaniya, Chaqra, Qantara and as-Sawana in southern Lebanon. There were no immediate reports of casualties from those strikes.

Khiam holds significant strategic importance because it sits on elevated ground just a few kilometres from the Israeli border and the Litani River, allowing commanding views over northern Israel and surrounding Lebanese territory. Control of the area is also crucial because key roads from the town connect to other regions of southern Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley, where Hezbollah maintains strong influence.

The latest escalation follows a widening regional conflict that erupted after the killing of Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader. Hezbollah launched rockets at Israel in response, marking its first major attack since a 2024 ceasefire that had largely held despite repeated tensions along the border.

Military analysts say Israel’s operations aim to disrupt Hezbollah’s supply routes and prevent fighters and weapons from moving south of the Litani River, a key area under previous ceasefire arrangements.

The fighting has triggered a major humanitarian crisis. More than 800,000 people have been displaced from their homes after evacuation orders were issued across large parts of southern Lebanon and areas of the capital, Beirut.

Lebanese officials say Israeli attacks have so far killed at least 850 people, including 107 children and 66 women, as the conflict continues to expand across the region.

Israeli Bombing Targets Northern Gaza Hospital, Escalating Humanitarian Crisis

GAZA CITY – Israeli forces intensified their offensive in northern Gaza by bombing the Kamal Adwan Hospital, halting life-saving surgeries as troops arrested several doctors. Reports indicate the facility was also strafed with machine-gun fire, further complicating efforts to treat injured civilians.

The humanitarian toll in Gaza worsened as an Israeli airstrike on a school-turned-shelter in Nuseirat camp, central Gaza, killed 17 Palestinians, including an 11-month-old baby, and left 42 others wounded. Meanwhile, Israeli military operations in Lebanon have also escalated, with at least 19 people killed in the past 24 hours.

    Rising Casualties Amid Prolonged Conflict

According to Gaza’s Government Media Office, over 770 Palestinians have been killed, and 1,000 wounded as Israel’s attack on Jabalia and its siege of northern Gaza extend into their 20th day. Since the conflict began on October 7, 2023, more than 42,847 Palestinians have lost their lives, with 100,544 wounded.

In Israel, 1,139 people were killed during the Hamas-led attacks, and more than 200 individuals remain in captivity.

Hezbollah Claims Destruction of Israeli Tank in Southern Lebanon

In a separate escalation, Hezbollah reported destroying an Israeli tank in Aita al-Shaab, southern Lebanon, with a guided missile, allegedly killing and injuring the crew.

The Lebanese militant group also claimed it is engaging in “intense, point-blank” clashes against Israeli forces in the area, deploying assault weapons and rocket-propelled grenades. Hezbollah stated on Wednesday that its fighters have killed more than 70 Israeli soldiers during clashes.

Israel counters that it has lost around 20 soldiers in ground operations inside Lebanon and an additional 30 soldiers due to Hezbollah attacks on northern Israel.

    Worsening Crisis and Uncertain Resolution

The escalating conflict has drawn international concern over the rising civilian death toll, particularly in Gaza, where relentless airstrikes and a blockade have pushed the region into a severe humanitarian crisis. Efforts to broker a ceasefire have made little headway, as both sides continue to engage in intense fighting across multiple fronts.
