Israeli Airstrikes Kill 15 in Qana Amid Renewed Lebanon Conflict
Qana, Lebanon (AP) – At least 15 people were killed in Israeli airstrikes on Qana, a town marked by a tragic history of civilian casualties from previous conflicts between Israel and Hezbollah. The renewed strikes have also targeted Beirut’s southern suburbs for the first time in nearly a week.
Escalation of Violence Across Southern Lebanon
The Israeli military launched a wave of airstrikes across Lebanon, including the southern city of Nabatiyeh. The attack targeted what Israel claimed were Hezbollah militant sites embedded within civilian areas, though no evidence has been provided to support these claims. Lebanon’s Health Ministry confirmed five deaths in Nabatiyeh, including Mayor Ahmad Kahil. The airstrikes also destroyed the city’s municipality building.
Earlier in the week, another Israeli attack devastated Nabatiyeh’s historic market, further intensifying the humanitarian crisis in the region.
Qana’s Tragic Legacy Revisited
Rescue workers in Qana are still searching for survivors in the rubble following Tuesday’s strikes. Civil Defense officials reported the recovery of 15 bodies so far. Qana is a town with a painful history, having witnessed severe civilian losses during previous Israeli offensives.
In 1996, an Israeli artillery strike hit a United Nations compound in Qana, killing more than 100 civilians and injuring dozens, including peacekeepers. A decade later, in 2006, another Israeli airstrike killed nearly 36 civilians, many of them children, in a residential building. Israel justified the strike, claiming it targeted a Hezbollah rocket launcher positioned nearby.
Airstrikes Resume on Beirut After Six-Day Lull
Following a brief pause in airstrikes on Beirut, Israel launched renewed attacks on southern Beirut’s Dahiyeh district early Wednesday. The densely populated area, home to both civilians and Hezbollah infrastructure, was struck after Israeli forces claimed they were targeting an arms depot beneath a residential building.
Despite issuing evacuation warnings on the social media platform X, the strikes have raised concerns about civilian casualties. An Associated Press photographer on the ground reported three airstrikes hitting the Haret Hreik neighborhood within an hour of the warnings.
Conflict Escalates After Hezbollah Joins the Fight
Hostilities have escalated since October 8, when Hezbollah began firing rockets into Israel in solidarity with Hamas following the group’s surprise attack on southern Israel. Israel responded with intensified strikes along the Lebanon-Israel border, escalating what had been a year of low-level skirmishes into full-scale war.
The conflict has displaced approximately 1.2 million people within Lebanon, according to government reports. Meanwhile, over 60,000 Israelis have fled northern areas due to intensified Hezbollah rocket attacks, which have killed nearly 60 Israelis, including both civilians and soldiers.
Regional Stability in Jeopardy
Hezbollah has vowed to continue its attacks unless a ceasefire is reached in Gaza, but efforts to broker peace through U.S., Egyptian, and Qatari negotiations have stalled.
Israel recently expanded its operations in Lebanon, following the reported killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and several high-ranking commanders in airstrikes. Ground operations along the border are also ongoing, as Israel aims to secure its northern communities from further attacks.
Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza
Israel is simultaneously engaged in an extended operation in Gaza, where it has been targeting Hamas militants in the Jabaliya refugee camp. Gaza’s Health Ministry reported that over 350 bodies have been recovered since October 6, many of them women and children.
The ministry estimates that more than 42,000 people have been killed since the beginning of Israel’s offensive. With large swathes of Gaza in ruins, nearly 90% of the population has been displaced, forcing hundreds of thousands into overcrowded shelters and refugee camps.
As the conflict deepens, the humanitarian toll continues to rise, with civilians in both Lebanon and Gaza bearing the brunt of the violence. International efforts to de-escalate the situation have so far made little progress, leaving the region on edge and uncertain about the future.
