Two people have been killed and at least 22 others injured after a car was driven into a crowded shopping area in Leipzig, in what authorities are describing as a violent rampage.
The incident unfolded on Monday afternoon in the busy Grimmaische Straße district, where a vehicle sped through pedestrians before coming to a stop near bollards. Emergency services rushed to the scene as الشرطة secured the area and began an investigation.
Leipzig Mayor Burkhard Jung confirmed that a 33-year-old German suspect has been arrested, though officials say the motive remains unclear. He described the घटना as “horrific,” noting that the city is mourning the loss of two lives and multiple serious injuries.
Police spokesperson Susanne Luebcke said the driver moved across Augustusplatz into Grimmaische Street at high speed, striking several people along the route. Authorities confirmed that three of the injured are in serious condition.
Officials identified the victims as a 63-year-old woman and a 77-year-old man, both German citizens. Prosecutors have launched a murder and attempted murder investigation, stating there is currently no evidence suggesting a political or religious motive.
State leader Michael Kretschmer said the suspect had a history of mental illness, though investigators are still working to establish the full circumstances behind the attack. Police believe the act was carried out by a lone individual and say there is no ongoing threat to the public.
