  • Nigeria Loses First Olympic Medalist at 85

    The death of Nigeria’s first medallist at the Olympic Games, Nojim Maiyegun, has been announced on Monday.

    Information which came from several sources said Maiyegun, died of natural causes at the age of 85 in Vienna, Austria where he had been living for years.

    Maiyegun, who was known to be virtually impaired for years, was reportedly frequenting the hospital in the past six months before his death which was also confirmed by another Nigerian, Stephen Ogboh who is an acquaintance of Pa Nojim in Austria.

    Maiyegun died just a few days after the 60th anniversary of his feat, when he won a bronze medal in boxing on 10 August 1964 at the Olympics in Tokyo.

    He shared the bronze medal with Józef Grzesiak of Poland in the Light middleweight category. The tradition at the Olympics is that the two losers in the semifinals are awarded the bronze medal, as there is no third-place bout.

    It was the first time since Helsinki 1952 when Nigeria started participating in the Games that he won a medal, thus ending Nigeria’s 12-year winless streak at the Olympics. 

    Maiyegun was born on 17 February 1941 in Lagos and achieved a historic feat for Nigeria by winning a bronze medal in the men’s Light Middleweight (71 kg) category at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.

    He was Nigeria’s first Olympic medallist. Not much was heard of him until 2012 when his loss of vision was made public that year.

    The Governor of Edo state, South south Nigeria, Mr Godwin Obaseki has splashed a sum of one hundred million naira on players , coaching crew and supporters of
    Edo Queens FC who recently emerged CAF women Champions in the WAFU Zone B Qualifier.

    Mr . Obaseki was joined by his wife Betsy, the Deputy Governor Marvellous Godwins Omobayo and the Governorship Candidates of PDP Asue Ighodalo and his wife, permanent Secretaries, other top government functionaries and sports enthusiasts to receive the victorious girls in Government House.

    Gov. Obaseki while receiving the trophy said Edo is in a season of celebration as the state celebrates 33 years of creeation.

    He noted that the trophy is a great way to celebrate the people of the State.

    First Lady Of Edo State, Dr. Betsy Obaseki thanked the girls for the honour brought to the people of Edo State by conquering West Africa.

    Executive Chairman of Edo State sports commission, Yusuf Alli and Coach of the victorious Edo Queens Moses Aduku thanked Governor Obaseki and his wife Betsy for the financial and moral support given to the girls throughout the competition in Ivory Coast West Africa which translated to their victory.

    The State Governor expressed the hope that from the foregoing Edo Queens in on the verge of bringing the Africa Cup to Edo.

  • Heartland FC Loses Coach in Auto Crash

    Heartland Football Club has confirmed the death of head coach Samson Obi who died after an auto accident.

    In a statement issued in Owerri, the Imo State capital and made available to newsmen on Saturday, the club’s media officer, Tunde Liadi, confirmed the incident.

    Liadi stated that the accident occurred at Okwelle in Onuimo Local Government Area of Imo at about 4pm on Friday.

    According to him, the accident occured when their Coaster bus collided with a stationary truck while trying to avoid a head-on collision with an oncoming vehicle.

    There were at least 20 members of the team in the bus and some players sustained various degrees of injuries.

    The team was reportedly on their way for the TICO/SELECT Ifeanyi Ekwueme Preseason Tournament taking place in Abakaliki, Ebonyi, when the accident happened.

    According to Liadi’s statement, the driver tried his best to avert the accident, but the impact of the collision caused a sudden shock to the coach, which made him lose consciousness, with a slight injury on his right leg at the time he was taken out of the badly damaged bus. 

    Obi and other injured players were immediately rushed to a nearby private hospital for medical treatment.

    Liadi expressed regret that the highly respected coach later passed on while the medical team was making a frantic effort to resuscitate him.

    “The heartbreaking day saw the Heartland FC team departing the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri, for the pre-season tournament with enthusiasm at around 3:30 p.m. in three vehicles.

    “At about some minutes past 4 p.m., one of the vehicles rammed into a carelessly parked truck while attempting to avoid an oncoming vehicle.

    “Words alone cannot fully capture how the news of his death has thrown everyone at the club into deep mourning because of how precious he was to the club”, he stated.

    The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN reports that Obi‘s remains have since been deposited at the Federal University Teaching Hospital (FUTH), Owerri morgue, while the injured players were referred to the same hospital for proper medical care.
