Canada is deepening its military relationship with Ukraine as Prime Minister Mark Carney uses President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to announce a new wave of defence cooperation, air-defence support and drone production.
The announcements put Canada’s industrial capacity at the centre of the partnership. Ottawa says the goal is not only to help Ukraine withstand Russia’s aerial campaign, but also to build Canadian capabilities that can strengthen the country’s own defence industry and supply chains.
Air defence moves to the top of the agenda
Carney has confirmed additional Canadian support for Ukraine’s air-defence needs as Russian attacks continue to threaten cities and energy infrastructure. The two governments are also backing work on lower-cost interceptors designed to deal with ballistic-missile threats.
Canada wants more drones made at home
A major part of the new strategy is a national procurement arrangement intended to speed up the production of military drones in Canada. The partnership draws on Ukraine’s battlefield experience with uncrewed systems while giving Canadian companies a larger role in defence manufacturing.
For Canadian businesses, that could create new opportunities in robotics, electronics, software, advanced manufacturing and related supply chains. It also reflects a broader effort by Ottawa to build more domestic defence capacity instead of relying heavily on overseas suppliers.
Why Zelenskyy’s visit matters
The visit comes as Ukraine prepares for another difficult winter and seeks stronger international support. Canada and Ukraine have also announced deeper long-term cooperation covering defence technology, reconstruction and economic resilience.
For Ottawa, the relationship is increasingly about both security policy and industrial strategy. For Kyiv, the immediate priority remains obtaining the equipment needed to protect people and critical infrastructure.
The next test will be how quickly the new announcements turn into contracts, production and equipment reaching the field.
