The University of Manitoba Faculty Association (UMFA), representing approximately 1,300 professors, librarians, and instructors, has reached a tentative agreement with the university’s administration early Saturday morning. The union had set a bargaining deadline for Thursday, with a potential strike planned for Monday.
UMFA President Erik Thomson announced in a news release that union members will vote on the agreement next Thursday. He stated that the deal ensures students can continue their term without interruption, with further details to be shared with members next week.
Union members have been without a contract since their previous collective agreement expired on March 31, 2024. Their demands have included salary increases, improved hiring practices, and access to child-care services. The union previously went on strike for five weeks in 2021 and three weeks in 2016.
The University of Manitoba’s administration emphasized in a statement that the agreement reflects its commitment to a “fair and competitive deal” in recognition of faculty members’ contributions.
