U.S. Urges Israel to Halt Fire on UN Peacekeepers Amid Escalating Conflict with Hezbollah
The United States has called on Israel to cease firing on United Nations peacekeepers stationed in Lebanon, following two incidents that resulted in injuries to UN personnel within 48 hours. President Joe Biden emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that he is “absolutely, positively” urging Israel to take immediate action to prevent further attacks on the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) amid the ongoing conflict with Hezbollah.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) acknowledged responsibility for the most recent incident, which occurred on Friday near a UNIFIL base in Naqoura, where two Sri Lankan peacekeepers were injured. The IDF stated that its soldiers, operating near the base, identified a potential threat and responded with gunfire. The Israeli military confirmed that the incident is under investigation “at the highest levels.”
A similar event unfolded just one day prior, when two Indonesian peacekeepers were injured after an Israeli tank fired at an observation tower, causing the soldiers to fall from the structure. Both incidents have sparked international concern, with the leaders of France, Italy, and Spain issuing a joint statement condemning Israel’s actions, calling them “unjustifiable” and demanding an immediate halt.
Sri Lanka’s foreign ministry also issued a strong condemnation of the attack, which injured two of its peacekeepers. Jean-Pierre Lacroix, head of UN peacekeeping, voiced concerns that some of the firing on UN positions in southern Lebanon appeared to be direct, noting damage to infrastructure such as cameras and observation towers.
As the conflict intensifies, Israeli and Hezbollah forces continue to exchange missile and rocket fire across the Israel-Lebanon border. On Friday, the IDF reported that approximately 100 rockets were launched from Lebanon into northern Israel within half an hour, and two unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) crossed the border, one of which was intercepted.
Meanwhile, Lebanon’s Ministry of Health reported the deaths of three civilians, including a two-year-old girl, following an Israeli raid on Sidon, a city in southern Lebanon. Additionally, two Lebanese soldiers were killed when Israeli forces targeted an army post in Kafra, according to the Lebanese army.
The situation in Lebanon’s capital, Beirut, remains dire, with emergency workers sifting through the debris from Israeli airstrikes that struck the city on Thursday. Lebanon’s Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, condemned the attacks, which he said killed 22 civilians and injured 117 others without prior warning. Israel has yet to comment on the strikes.
The IDF launched a ground invasion into southern Lebanon last month in response to ongoing rocket fire from Hezbollah. The current escalation comes after Hezbollah and Israel began near-daily cross-border skirmishes following an attack by Hamas on southern Israeli communities last October.
UNIFIL reported additional incidents, including the destruction of barriers by Israeli military vehicles at a UN site in Labbouneh, further escalating tensions. The organization described these actions as a “serious development.”
Prime Minister Mikati condemned Friday’s attack on UN peacekeepers, calling it “a crime directed at the international community,” and urging for an immediate cessation of hostilities.
