U.S. Supreme Court Backs Trump on Ending Humanitarian Parole for Over 500,000 Migrants

In a landmark move, the U.S. Supreme Court has allowed President Donald Trump’s administration to revoke temporary legal status for over 500,000 migrants from Venezuela, Cuba, Haiti, and Nicaragua. The decision overturns a previous injunction by a lower court that halted the administration’s attempt to terminate immigration parole granted under former President Joe Biden.

Issued without a written opinion, the Supreme Court’s order supports the Trump administration’s push to fast-track deportations via “expedited removal.” Only Justices Ketanji Brown Jackson and Sonia Sotomayor dissented publicly, warning of devastating impacts on migrants’ lives.

Humanitarian parole permits migrants to live and work in the U.S. for urgent humanitarian reasons. The Biden administration had used this policy to manage surging border crossings, allowing specific nationalities to apply for two-year stays under strict conditions. Trump revoked these programs upon returning to office in January, moving to terminate all parole grants by March.

Critics argue the mass termination violates federal law requiring individualized review. Judge Indira Talwani had ruled the administration must assess each case separately, but the Justice Department contested this in the Supreme Court, calling the decision a threat to immigration enforcement.

Plaintiff organizations, including the Haitian Bridge Alliance and the Justice Action Center, condemned the ruling, citing chaos, potential family separation, and the threat of returning migrants to dangerous conditions. The Biden-era protections for Venezuelans and others are now at risk, pending ongoing legal battles.
