Twitch, the Amazon-owned livestreaming platform, is grappling with mounting backlash from advertisers and brands amid controversies surrounding political discussions, antisemitism allegations, and hate speech. Companies like JPMorgan Chase, Chevron, AT&T, and Dunkin’ Donuts have reportedly pulled their advertising from Twitch, citing concerns over brand safety and content appearing alongside their ads.
The turmoil stems from comments made by streamers and panelists during TwitchCon, a semi-annual event dedicated to Twitch creators and users. A panel hosted by the “Ayyrabs Podcast” at the event became a flashpoint, with sponsors like Chevron expressing disappointment over “deeply hurtful” comments made on stage. Panelists ranking streamers’ “Arabness” and the inclusion of controversial labels, such as “Loves Sabra,” referencing the hummus brand often boycotted by pro-Palestinian groups, drew significant criticism.
In response, Twitch suspended several panelists and other prominent users, including Hasan Piker and Zack Hoyt, known as Asmongold, for comments deemed harmful. However, disparities in the length of suspensions have fueled additional criticism. Piker has defended his outspoken stance on Palestinian rights, rejecting allegations of antisemitism. Hoyt, meanwhile, faced backlash for making derogatory remarks about Palestinians, later apologizing for his comments.
A campaign led by figures like Dan Saltman, calling for Twitch CEO Dan Clancy’s resignation, has also pressured advertisers to reevaluate their relationships with the platform. Saltman and other Twitch critics argue that the platform has failed to address hate speech effectively and foster a safe environment for discourse.
Twitch has updated its policies to address these concerns, introducing measures such as including “Zionist” under its hate speech guidelines when used in a demeaning way and requiring streamers to label politically sensitive content. The company maintains that it enforces rules impartially and aims to balance free expression with community safety.
The controversies highlight the challenges faced by social platforms in managing sensitive political topics while maintaining advertiser trust and community standards.
