Tupac Shakur Murder Case: Lawyers Explore Alternative Death Cause, Seek Trial Delay

Lawyers for Duane “Keffe D” Davis, the sole living suspect in the 1996 shooting of rap legend Tupac Shakur, are investigating evidence suggesting an alternative cause of death. Davis is accused of orchestrating the shooting on September 7, 1996, when Shakur was shot in Las Vegas, Nevada, and succumbed to his injuries six days later.

Defense attorneys assert witness claims that Shakur was in stable condition after the shooting and are consulting medical and forensic experts to evaluate potential alternative explanations for his death. A motion filed Friday in a Nevada court seeks to delay Davis’s trial, set for next month, citing the need for additional time to investigate and ensure a fair trial.

The motion highlights statements from witnesses who allegedly place Davis away from the crime scene and even out of Las Vegas at the time of the shooting. Furthermore, the defense hints at the involvement of other individuals in orchestrating the attack.

“This case involves decades-old allegations, and with every new piece of evidence, it becomes increasingly clear that critical facts have yet to be fully examined,” said Davis’s attorney, Carl Arnold.

On the night of the shooting, Shakur was in a BMW driven by Death Row Records founder Marion “Suge” Knight when a white Cadillac pulled up and gunfire erupted. Davis, an ex-gang leader, has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder charges and has remained in custody since his arrest in September 2023.

A hearing to discuss the trial timeline is scheduled for Tuesday.
