Trump Team Delays Transition Agreement, White House Urges Smooth Power Handover
The transition of power between the Biden administration and the Trump-Vance team remains in limbo, with essential agreements still unsigned. According to the White House, the delay is hindering preparations for a seamless and secure transition.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre addressed the issue during a press briefing on Thursday, stating, “Our teams continue to stay in touch. However, as of now, the Trump-Vance transition team has not yet entered into the agreements with the White House and the General Services Administration (GSA).”
Why the Transition Agreements Matter
These agreements are critical for facilitating a smooth transfer of authority. Without them, the government cannot provide security clearances or briefings to the incoming administration. Furthermore, the FBI is unable to vet President-elect Trump’s Cabinet nominees or other key appointments.
The GSA outlines additional provisions tied to these agreements, including access to office space, IT equipment, vehicles, and administrative support, as well as funding for transition-related expenses.
Jean-Pierre emphasized President Biden’s commitment to ensuring a peaceful and efficient transition, noting, “President Biden met with the president-elect to demonstrate the importance of this process and to offer any necessary assistance.”

The prolonged inaction may result in significant disruptions. Senators could be forced to vote on Trump’s Cabinet nominees without the standard background checks. This vetting process is designed to identify potential red flags, such as criminal histories or conflicts of interest, that might disqualify nominees from critical roles.
According to Jean-Pierre, the White House is continuing discussions with the Trump-Vance team to expedite the process. “We’re stressing the importance of access to services and information outlined in the GSA and the White House memorandum of agreement,” she said. “We want this to go smoothly, and we’re doing everything we can to ensure that outcome.”
