Trump Meets with El Salvador’s Bukele as Deportation Controversy Deepens

In a pivotal meeting on Monday, U.S. President Donald Trump met with El Salvador President Nayib Bukele, a leader praised for his controversial handling of gang members and detainees, a practice aligned with Trump’s tough stance on immigration. The Trump administration has deported hundreds of Venezuelans to El Salvador under the 1798 Alien Enemies Act, including the case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland resident deported by mistake despite a legal order protecting him from deportation.

Trump has lauded Bukele for accepting U.S. deportees, who are housed in high-security prisons notorious for human rights abuses. Critics have raised concerns about the conditions of these prisons, yet Trump dismissed such allegations, expressing support for Bukele’s policies and calling his approach “fantastic.”

The situation gained further attention after the U.S. Supreme Court ordered the return of Abrego Garcia, but the Trump administration claimed it was not obligated to facilitate his return, citing El Salvador’s jurisdiction over its citizens. In response, Bukele’s government defended the deportations, even mocking a court order to return the deportees, while further complicating the issue.

Bukele’s controversial approach to security, including his tough-on-crime policies and efforts to circumvent constitutional limits, has garnered both praise for reducing violence and criticism over his government’s dealings with gangs. Human rights organizations and critics of the deportations continue to raise alarms about the legality and morality of these actions.
