Tensions flared again between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, as Trump criticized Zelenskyy for making “inflammatory statements” during ongoing peace negotiations aimed at ending Russia’s war in Ukraine. Trump’s remarks followed Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s last-minute withdrawal from high-level London talks, prompting the cancellation of a broader ministerial meeting with European and Ukrainian officials.
Although some discussions continued with U.S. envoy Gen. Keith Kellogg, the downgraded meeting signaled growing frustration. Rubio’s absence was notable, as he and Trump had earlier warned that the U.S. might withdraw from the talks if progress stalled.
Controversy mounted over a U.S. proposal—introduced by Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff during earlier Paris meetings—that included recognition of Russia’s annexation of Crimea. The suggestion, flatly rejected by Ukraine and Europe, highlighted widening rifts among allies. Zelenskyy reaffirmed Ukraine’s firm stance: negotiations, yes—but not at the cost of territorial sovereignty.
Further dividing views, Washington proposed lifting some sanctions on Russia, a neutral zone around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, and an end to Ukraine’s NATO aspirations. European diplomats and Kyiv voiced concern that these compromises undermined core principles.
Meanwhile, a deadly Russian drone strike in Marhanets killed nine civilians, underlining the urgent stakes. Despite backchannel efforts, including a planned meeting between Witkoff and Putin, Russia continues to expand military production.
The push-and-pull of diplomacy continues, with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte headed to Washington for further discussions.
