Trudeau Urges Global AI Promotion to Spread Wealth Beyond Oligarchs

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has called for global regulations on artificial intelligence (AI) to ensure the technology benefits all nations rather than being monopolized by wealthy elites. Speaking at an international AI conference in Paris, Trudeau emphasized the need for safeguards, transparency, and accountability to prevent AI from serving only a small group of ultra-rich individuals focused on their financial interests.

Trudeau stressed that AI should be an inclusive technology that supports both high and low-income countries, not just an exclusive tool for the economic elite. He argued that without regulatory measures, AI risks becoming another asset hoarded by a handful of oligarchs who prioritize stock market gains over societal well-being. The Canadian leader underscored that while progress in AI is inevitable and should not be hindered, clear guardrails must be established to ensure fairness and ethical deployment.

His remarks come as U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration continues to resist international regulatory efforts on AI. The Trump administration has historically maintained a close relationship with the tech industry, advocating for fewer restrictions and opposing global oversight. The divide between regulatory-minded leaders like Trudeau and deregulation-focused policies in the U.S. highlights ongoing tensions over the future governance of AI.

Adding to geopolitical friction, Trump announced on Sunday that his administration would impose a 25% tariff on all steel and aluminum imports, including those from Canada. His comments further inflamed diplomatic relations when he reiterated his controversial stance that Canada should become the 51st U.S. state. The trade dispute has fueled economic concerns, particularly as both countries navigate complex negotiations on technology policies, including AI.

During his speech, Trudeau also reinforced Canada’s commitment to making AI a central topic at the upcoming G7 summit. He outlined plans to advocate for stronger global cooperation on AI ethics, transparency, and governance. Additionally, he used the platform to promote Canada as a leading hub for AI research and investment, positioning the country as an attractive destination for tech innovation and responsible AI development.
