Trudeau Criticizes Poilievre for Failing to Set Politics Aside Amid Trump’s Tariff Threat

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has accused Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre of prioritizing partisanship over national interests as Canada faces the looming threat of U.S. tariffs. The remarks followed Trudeau’s recent trip to Florida to meet with President-elect Donald Trump, who has threatened a 25% tariff on Canadian and Mexican imports unless the two countries curb the flow of illegal drugs and migrants into the U.S.

On Tuesday, Trudeau met with Poilievre and other opposition leaders to brief them on his discussions with Trump. Despite a shared acknowledgment that the proposed tariffs would be economically disastrous, the meeting failed to unite the political factions. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Trudeau criticized Poilievre’s response.

“In moments of crisis, Canadians have a tradition of coming together across party lines to defend our national interests,” Trudeau said. “It’s clear that Pierre Poilievre is unwilling or unable to do that.”

Border Policies Spark Partisan Divide

Poilievre has been vocal in his criticism of the Liberal government’s handling of border security, accusing Trudeau of “losing control” of immigration and border management. Following Tuesday’s meeting, Poilievre described Canada’s border as “broken,” fueling Trump’s narrative of unchecked migration and drug trafficking from Canada.

In contrast, Green Party Leader Elizabeth May emphasized the importance of presenting a united front. She revealed that Trudeau had urged opposition leaders not to amplify Trump’s rhetoric, warning that it could further harm Canada-U.S. relations.

“We were reminded to avoid feeding into false claims about our border and to push back against the language being used to attack Canada,” May said.

Irregular Border Crossings Highlighted

Quebec’s Public Security Minister François Bonnardel disclosed new data showing a significant rise in irregular crossings from Canada to the U.S. in recent years. Of the 25,000 irregular crossings recorded this year, 19,000 occurred between Ontario and Quebec. The uptick comes amid growing scrutiny of cross-border drug and weapon flows.

While Trudeau’s government has pledged measures to address border security concerns, including investments in drones and helicopters, Poilievre has continued to attack the government’s perceived inaction.

Economic Fallout Looms

Poilievre called on Trudeau to underscore to the U.S. administration the economic consequences of imposing tariffs, stressing that such measures would harm businesses and workers on both sides of the border. “It should be easy for Canada to avoid these tariffs if the Americans understand the damage they would inflict on their own economy,” Poilievre said.

As the situation develops, the lack of a unified Canadian stance may complicate efforts to counter the potential economic fallout of Trump’s tariff threats.
