A devastating fire in Trenton, Ontario, claimed the lives of a one-year-old child and a 66-year-old woman Thursday evening, according to Ontario Provincial Police (OPP). Three others sustained injuries in the blaze.
Emergency crews responded just before 6 p.m. to a residential trailer on Old Highway 2, just east of CFB Trenton, finding it engulfed in flames. Quinte West Fire Chief John Whelan described the scene as “frantic,” with people screaming that individuals were still trapped inside.
An adult and two children, aged seven and nine, managed to escape. A 64-year-old man was transported to the hospital with serious injuries, while the two children were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Officials said one individual who attempted to re-enter the trailer suffered severe burns across most of their body. The intense heat also melted the siding of two nearby homes.
The victims’ names have not yet been released. OPP is investigating the cause of the fire alongside the fire marshal and chief coroner’s offices. Whelan noted reports that a grease fire may have been doused with water, worsening the flames, and that the trailer lacked working smoke detectors. However, these details have not been officially confirmed.
