At least 18 people, including 14 women, lost their lives in a stampede at New Delhi’s railway station, according to the Press Trust of India. The tragic incident occurred late Saturday as thousands of passengers, many Hindu pilgrims traveling to the Maha Kumbh festival in Prayagraj, crowded the station.
Authorities stated that the chaos began when some passengers slipped on a footbridge connecting train platforms, triggering a deadly crowd surge. Sheela Devi, grieving the loss of her daughter-in-law, recounted how a platform change announcement caused confusion, further aggravating the situation.
Nikhil Kumar, a shopkeeper who witnessed the stampede, described the crowd as uncontrollable. Images from outside a hospital in New Delhi showed devastated relatives consoling one another.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his distress, offering condolences to the bereaved and wishing a speedy recovery for the injured. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the stampede.
This tragic event follows another deadly stampede last month at the Maha Kumbh festival, where 30 lives were lost.
